Two questions for the weekend – Start exploring.
I tend to feel quite contented with my life in general, but of course there are times when I wish I were more than ‘that’. I guess I am still on the quest, aspiring for something deeper and more meaningful. A journey that never seems to fully go anywhere, like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel but never quite reaching it.
There are two questions I often ask myself to help me a little further along the track, try them out.
1. What do I really want?
This is the question of the century, and I honestly wish I could have the answer to this one! I remember in high school there was this super cute guy who knew he wanted to be a teacher. That was it! He knew! He put all is efforts in one direction and now, he is a teacher and a very good one I guess because he had a passion for it!
Some people believe that the route to happiness and feeling fulfilled is somehow aligned with the passions and the drives we had when we were children.
When I was a kid I had a vibrant imagination and being an only child made me super creative at finding ways to entertain myself. The abilities and aspirations I had as a kid somehow continue to live within me somewhere but finding them and reconnecting to them is proving quite difficult.
Realistically, it’s ok not to know for sure what you really want. What’s important is to take a few steps in a direction and see what happens. Find something you’re good at, something you enjoy or something you want to try out and give yourself the chance to do something about it. In other words, take action and see where it takes you.
At one stage in my life I wanted to be a tourist guide in London, I went on a few guided walks, I took a short course and then I thought it was not for me.
Just think process of elimination over procrastination!
2. Should I change?
It is so tough to change and it requires persistence. Change is scary but change is good, it brings flexibility. Realistically changing your personality, the essence of who you are is probably a no-go area, it will look and feel a little fake. Changing habits though, might be beneficial in more than one way. What are the habits and behaviours you really like, the ones you want to keep and what are the ones that need a little fine-tuning?
Remember with this one, change for yourself, not for someone else.
What’s the point of all this?
There is so much happening all the time around us that we don’t really take the time think about number one and where we are heading to. What is there wasn’t a light but a train at the end of the tunnel would you not want to jump onboard and become an explorer?
